The early morning mist clung to the ancient trees as we set out from our lodge, boots crunching softly on the damp earth. Our guide’s voice was barely a whisper: “They’re close.” Every sense was on high alert – birdsong above, the rich scent of moss and earth, and the thrill of the unknown ahead. Then, through a tangle of vines, we saw them: a family of mountain gorillas, so close you could see the gentle wisdom in their eyes. In that moment, time stood still. This is gorilla trekking in Uganda – an experience that will stay with you forever.
Uganda is home to two extraordinary destinations for gorilla trekking:
1. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park: A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bwindi is famed for its dense, ancient rainforest and the largest population of mountain gorillas. The terrain is rugged, but the rewards are immense – multiple habituated gorilla families and a rich diversity of birds and primates. The park offers four trailheads for gorilla trekking:

2. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park: Tucked into the Virunga Mountains near the Rwanda border, Mgahinga is smaller but equally magical. Here, you can trek through bamboo forests at the base of extinct volcanoes and sometimes spot golden monkeys alongside gorillas. It’s less crowded and offers stunning views of the volcanoes.

While gorilla trekking is possible year-round, the best times to visit are during the dry seasons:
Trails are less muddy, and conditions are generally more comfortable, offering easier hiking conditions and better photography opportunities. However, gorillas can be seen in any season, and the lush, misty forests are magical even in the rains.
Gorilla trekking permits in Uganda cost $800 per person. This fee allows you to spend one hour observing a gorilla family. For a more immersive experience, consider the gorilla habituation experience, which costs $1,500 and allows up to four hours with the gorillas.
Enhance your adventure with a stay at one of our partner lodges, renowned for their comfort, hospitality, and commitment to conservation:
